Stem Cells Can Defy Their Fates via Mitochondrial Mechanism

Cell plasticity has been found to be regulated by a mitochondrial signaling loop. The discovery comes from a study that used a zebrafish model to preserve physiological context and show how quiescent cells could be coased into rentering the cell cycle. In this study, ROS production was found to induce Sgk1 expression and thereby alter cell fate, via ATP synthase phosphoryation.
