Models have a long and storied history in the field of neuroscience. One of the most well-known, the Hodgkin-Huxley model of action potential propagation, has been around for more than fifty years and is partially incomplete because of how laborious it was to do the calculations by hand. Fortunately, computers have made it much easier to create models of neuronal function, and models still play an important role in neuroscience today. If you’re curious about more recent models of the nervous system, check out ModelDB. This database compiles over 1,700 models that attempt to explain nervous system function across numerous species. Each model on the website includes information about its original publication and its source code if you want to try running the model yourself. Users can easily search for models by author, cell type, or brain region. The website also includes additional resources such as links to other computational neuroscience websites. Computational models are a neuroscience staple, and ModelDB is a great resource for perusing through many of them.
