Plant Compound Improves Cognitive Deficits in Mouse Model of Down Syndrome

A compound called apigenin, which is naturally found in plants such as parsley, peppermint, and citrus fruits, has been shown to improve cognitive and memory deficits that are seen in a mouse model of Down syndrome (DS). An NHGRI-headed team of scientists added apigenin to the normal diets of pregnant mice that were carrying fetuses with Down syndrome characteristics, and to the offspring. The results indicated that apigenin improved several developmental milestones, and improved in spatial and olfactory memory.
