International Study Reveals Higher Rates of Gene Transfer in the Industrialized Human Microbiome
The first major paper from the Global Microbiome Conservancy, a consortium that is collecting microbiome samples from underrepresented human populations around the world, investigated the extent to which the rates and targets of horizontal gene transfer vary across 15 human populations spanning a range of industrialization. The work reveals elevated rates of horizontal gene transfer in the industrialized human microbiome.
