Through genome reduction, Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria were deprived of their pathogenic abilities and engineered to express biofilm-dispersing agents as well as bactericidal peptides against antibiotic-resistant biofilms. The “living biotherapeutics” dissolved biofilms on catheters that had been implanted in mice.
