SWISS-MODEL

Rating: Excellent

Able to process data directly on your browser, extensive documentation and tutorials available. SWISS-MODEL, from the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and Biozentrum of the University of Basel, is an excellent tool for examining the homology between different proteins right from your browser. The website accepts protein sequences, which users can either use to search for known 3D protein structures or to directly build a model. After building a model of their proteins, users can examine the proteins’ structures or move directly to comparing multiple proteins against each other. The comparison window comes with numerous customizations for viewing the proteins, designates which portions of the proteins differ from each other, and provides information about ensemble consistency and variance. Users can sign up for an account to save their data and to use other tools featured on the website, which includes a repository of protein models, qualitative model energy analysis, and local distance difference tests.
