The spare bedroom of Steve Jobs’ parents’ Los Alto, CA, home was where he and partners Steve Wozniak and Ronald G. Wayne manufactured the first Apple computers. A few months later as business began to take off, they moved to roomier quarters—in Jobs’ parents’ garage.
Biopharma startups, however, don’t have the luxury of squeezing into mom and dad’s garage unneeded space, not when they have to make use of equipment ranging from sequencers to centrifuges. They can and often do, however, squeeze into spaces specially designed for research and development.
Those spaces may be called incubators, or accelerators, or commercialization centers. A few spaces are community labs designed for both the citizen scientist and the professional researcher. A few others, on the other hand, have been launched by pharma giants like Bayer and Merck & Co. with Johnson & Johnson opening no less than four “JLABS” locations and gearing up to open a fifth.
Following is a list of 65 U.S. incubators serving biotechnology and pharmaceutical startups, unranked and listed in alphabetical order, based on information furnished by the companies on their websites and other publicly available material, including their LinkedIn and Twitter pages and press announcements. While our search was exhaustive and the list is comprehensive, it does not constitute a complete listing of all incubators and accelerators.
Each incubator is listed with its address, website address, what startups it is designed for, size, number of companies, year opened, and manager or other contact person. Some incubators do not furnish numbers of companies housed or served, because some of those companies are in stealth mode.
