MALT1 protein cleaves A20, which inhibits inflammatory response, according to Nature Immunology papers.

VIB researchers say that they have discovered the mechanism through which MALT1 plays a role in controlling inflammatory reactions. The investigators discovered that MALT1 cuts the A20 protein into pieces.


In normal circumstances, A20 inhibits inflammatory reactions. MALT1, however, counteracts this inhibition by cleaving A20, allowing the inflammation to progress freely.


Besides scientists from VIB, the research included investigators connected to Ghent University and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The study will be published in Nature Immunology.
