Summary:

1,988. This is the number of endangered and threatened plant and animal species throughout the world, as reported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Of those, over 1,000 are species in the United States. The home page for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Endangered Species Program is filled with a great deal of useful and interesting information that extends far beyond simple statistics. In addition to the more “technical” pages that include information for landowners, grant programs, and laws and policies, the website offers general educational information. For instance, visitors to the site can search for endangered species by state or county, and they can check out the featured species of the month. For each species there is information about where it is found, conservation plans, and recovery status, among other information.
