Summary:

The pathways to careers in science are long and arduous, but they can be even more difficult to traverse for underrepresented minorities. The Pathways to Science project out of the Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP) is an excellent online resource aimed at increasing and supporting diversity in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The website contains valuable information for students/scientists at any stage of their careers, from K–12 to faculty members. So what are some of the tools available on the site? For K–12 students there are listings of high school programs in STEM and tips for applying and financing college. College students can browse more than 650 paid summer research positions and internships for undergraduates and can read about applying to graduate school. At the graduate student and postdoc level, there is an emphasis on applying for fellowships and choosing an appropriate postdoctoral laboratory. Finally, the faculty section includes information on conferences and mentoring underrepresented students.
