The first facility in Ireland licensed to manufacture cultured stem cells for human use was launched today at the National University of Ireland at Galway (NUI Galway). The Centre for Cell Manufacturing will produce stem cells for use in clinical trials of new treatments for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. The Irish Times reported that Ireland’s Health Research Board and Science Foundation Ireland have approved funding at the Centre for trials using mesenchymal stem cells to treat critical limb ischemia, which is linked to diabetes.

NUI Galway hopes that the Centre will help make Ireland a global leader in regenerative medicine. The Centre will be launched by Ireland’s Minister for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock at the Atrium, Orbsen Building at the University.
