Summary:
The zebra finch is an important model organism for neurobiology, in particular with regards to language acquisition. The Zebra finch Expression Brain Atlas (or, ZEBrA) is therefore an essential resource for neurobiologists. This database, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health (specifically, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, NIGMS), consists of a repository of in situ hybridization data—updated on a monthly basis—for a large number of genes expressed in the brain. At present the database only contains gene expression data for adult male zebra finches, so hopefully in the near future it will expand to include gene expression during development and for both sexes. Site visitors can browse the repository by gene name, neuroanatomical marker, or gene family, or they can search by gene description or signal. Users can also browse a histological atlas of the brain.
