Rating:
Strong Points: Vast coverage
Weak Points: Way too many ads

Summary:
What is there to say about a site that opens with “Your Universe, Online”? Well, if the opening page is any indication, my universe includes automobile ads. OK, I do drive a car, so technically that is correct. Unfortunately, ads take up a disproportionately large segment of the site and often appear at the opening of video content. Fortunately, though, there are some very good things to like about the Red Orbit site. First up is the expansive coverage of interesting news items. At press time, this included coverage of the Bali climate talks, the AGU meeting in San Francisco, exciting new findings about Jupiter’s Europa moon, and the use of stem cells to fix breast defects. Second, the topics covered on the site are broader than your average newspaper. Third, the news is literally up to the minute. I saw stories here before they ever appeared in printed newspapers. So, if you can stomach the ads (you probably can), Red Orbit is a valuable source of online news in a variety of topics.
