Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) continue to fight the negative image of being “Frankenstein plants”—something unnatural and mysterious, born deep within the confines of a dank laboratory. GMO Compass is a website that removes the shroud of mystery from these organisms, serving to educate the general public on current policies and practices regarding GMOs, as well as their safety and regulation. The site is based out of Europe, so most of the country-specific information pertains to members of the EU. However, there is still much information of interest on this site even to those of us who are stateside. The glossary demystifies much of the scientific jargon related to GMOs, while the animations describing the authorization process and the effects of genetically modified maize are fun and accessible. The site contains a good deal of information that is pertinent to the ongoing discussions about GMOs both in Europe and the U.S.
