Summary:

The large and diverse cichlid fish family (comprised of approximately 2,000 species) is a useful model organism to study the genetics underlying morphological and behavioral traits. The Cichlid Genome Engineering website by Scott Juntti, Ph.D., assistant professor, University of Maryland, College Park, provides researchers with a good collection of resources and protocols for manipulating the cichlid genome. Specifically, genome engineering in the cichlid is discussed in the context of three technologies/methods: microinjections, transgenics, and CRISPR/Cas9. Specific protocols are provided for each of those methods. Additional information is provided on the “resources” page of the site, which offers a small number of useful external links and references. Unfortunately, the website’s forum page seems to have never gained traction. However, as the author notes that the website is a work in progress one can hope that more information will continue to be added in the future.
